To qualify for government funding for university and TVET college studies, you must
- Be a South African citizen.
- Register at any of the 26 public universities or 50 TVET colleges.
- Come from a family with an income of below R350 000 per year (combined).

Students with disabilities and students who are beneficiaries of social grants automatically qualify for NSFAS funding. Students wanting to study towards postgraduate qualifications do not qualify for NSFAS funding – you are encouraged to seek funding from the National Skill Fund and the National Research Foundation.

NSFAS has hired 200 jobless NFAS alumni to assist high school students with the application process around the country.
These graduates will aid students in high schools and rural villages where there is no computer or internet connection.

If you are unable to complete the application by yourself, you can visit a National Youth Development Agency Centre, a Thusong Centre or one of NSFAS application partner’s centre near you, where a NSFAS representative will help you apply.

If your NSFAS application has been provisionally granted, you must register during Unisa’s registration period (3–24 January 2023).
If your NSFAS application is denied, you have the option of filing an appeal during the appeal period.
