Unisa’s Ranking Projections for 2025/2026: What to Expect:

Unisa Ranking is the position or status of the University of South Africa (Unisa) about other universities, based on various metrics and evaluation requirements. University rankings can be global, regional, or country-specific, and they often take into account a wide range of factors, including Academic Reputation, Research Output, Faculty Qualifications, Student-to-Teacher Ratio, Internationalization, Employability, Facilities and Infrastructure.

There are multiple entities and bodies that rank universities, such as the QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (often known as the Shanghai Ranking). Each uses its methodology, so Unisa’s rank might vary depending on the ranking entity and the requirement they prioritize.

The University of South Africa (Unisa) has long been a keystone of the South African tertiary education system, especially for distance learning. Over the years, Unisa’s standing has shifted on both national and global scales. With the 2025/2026 academic year drawing near, there’s burgeoning interest in where Unisa might rank.

Unisa’s Remarkable Journey

  • Established in 1873, Unisa has evolved from humble beginnings to become a globally recognized university, making education accessible to millions of students. Its focus on distance learning has played a crucial role in democratizing education, reaching learners from diverse backgrounds and geographical locations. Throughout the decades, Unisa’s dedication to research, innovation, and community engagement has garnered significant respect within academic circles.

 Unisa: A globally Competitive University

The 2025 QS World University Rankings, among other recent rankings and endorsements by reputable bodies in the higher education landscape, reflect Professor Puleng LenkaBula’s vision to reposition Unisa to reclaim its place at the top tier of tertiary education institutions in the continent and globally.

Marching up the ranks ladder to occupy the top seven universities demonstrates Unisa’s academic excellence and contribution to the global knowledge arena. This ranking further enhances Unisa’s reputation as an international higher education brand to be reckoned with.

Unisa remains on course towards fulfilling its mandate of becoming a comprehensive, open distance and eLearning (CODeL) institution that produces excellent scholarship and research while providing quality tuition and fostering active community engagement.

The university’s global contribution to the knowledge and information society advances development, nurtures a critical citizenry and ensures global sustainability. The evidence is in the 350,000 students enrolled annually, accommodating over a third of students in the country’s higher education system and 90 per cent of the distance learning component.

As the university continues to gain international recognition and endorsements, Unisa commits to persist in strengthening its efforts to reclaim its place at the top tier of tertiary education institutions in South Africa – and on the continent.

In news that further affirms Unisa’s stature and contributions to the higher education landscape on the continent and globally, the 2023 ShanghaiRanking’s Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), published on 15 August 2023, has ranked Unisa in the top eight best universities in the country and the top 1 000 universities globally.

Since 2003, ARWU has presented its rating of the world’s top universities annually based on transparent methodology and objective third-party data. The body is recognised as the precursor of global university rankings and the most trustworthy one. This year, more than 2,500 institutions were scrutinised, and the best 1,000 universities in the world were published.

Unisa continues to enjoy its spot in the top echelon of best South African universities along with the University of Cape Town, the University of the Witwatersrand, Stellenbosch University, the University of Pretoria, North-West University and the University of Johannesburg.

ARWU adopts six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of articles published in journals of nature and science, the number of highly cited researchers and articles indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded and the Social Sciences Citation Index based on data in the Web of Science, and per capita performance.
