Purpose: The three spheres of quality are quality control, quality assurance and quality management. There are differing perspectives on quality and this unit module will clearly explain quality management in terms of conventional quality control and TQM. Quality has developed into the most competitive weapon and organisations adopt quality as a strategy or a way of managing the future. TQM is far wider in its application than ensuring or controlling product or service quality. QM is inherent part of production and operations management. The primary purpose of this module is to provide students with an understanding of quality theory and for them to obtain an application of quality management in terms of quality control, quality assurance and quality management. This implies managing and utilizing the teachings, methods and tools to prevent errors (waste) and improve performance internal to the organisation.
