NSFAS applications for student funding for the 2025 academic year are now open for undergraduate students to apply for the 2025/2026 academic year.
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a government initiative aimed at providing financial assistance to eligible South African students who want to further their studies at public universities and TVET colleges. The NSFAS grant covers various expenses, including tuition fees, accommodation, books, and living expenses. The cost covered can include tuition, registration and allowances based on each student’s study circumstance. NSFAS provides funding to all approved students to cover the cost of tuition and registration.
Unisa NSFAS Application Date 2025-2026
NSFAS applications for student funding for the 2025 academic year are currently open and will be closed until 31 January 2025. NSFAS may not accept late applications, therefore, prospective applicants are advised to submit their applications before the closing date.
Qualification For Unisa Application NSFAS 2025/2026
To qualify for government funding for university and TVET college studies, you must be
- South African citizens or permanent residents
- SASSA grant recipients
- Applicants whose combined gross household income is not more than R350 000 per year
- Persons with disabilities whose combined gross household income is not more than R600 000 per year.
- Must have an email account and cell phone number.

Follow the A Step-by-Step Guide to Online NSFAS Registration for the 2025/2026 academic year;
- Create a profile:
Create a myNSFAS account via this link: https://my.nsfas.org.za/ or download the NSFAS App on Google Play or App Store. Your ID number will be your username.
- Apply now:
Click on the “Apply’ tab to update your personal information and upload your application supporting documents, as indicated.
- Complete:
Submit your application
Documents Required To Apply For NSFAS At UNISA 2025/2026
NSFAS applicants for the 2025 academic year must submit the following documents as required of them to register;
Students with disabilities must provide:
- A completed and signed Disability Annexure A Form
Students recognised as vulnerable children must provide:
- An applicant who is recognised as a vulnerable child by the Department of Social Development must provide and Vulnerable Child Declaration form completed by a social worker
Other documents that may be required, if applicable:
- Retrenchment letter
- Death certificate/s
- Divorce Decree
- Proof of legal guardianship
- Marriage certificate
- other documents may be required for appeal purposes,….eg retrenchment letter.

How To Check Your UNISA NSFAS Application Status 2025/2026
Application results will be communicated to all applicants once NSFAS receives confirmation from the Institution that an academic offer has been made to you. This will be communicated to you before the start of the academic year via SMS, email and through your myNSFAS account.
Once you have successfully logged into your NSFAS account, follow these steps to check your application status:
- Look for the “My Applications” or “Application Status” tab within your account.
- Click on the tab to view the status of your NSFAS application.
- The status may be displayed as “Pending,” “Complete,” “Evaluation in Progress,” “Provisionally Funded,” or “Funding Declined.”
