NSFAS applications for student funding for the 2023 academic year are now open
NSFAS applications for student funding for the 2023 academic year are open from 1 September to 30 November 2023
To qualify for government funding for university and TVET college studies, you must
- Be a South African citizen.
- Register at any of the 26 public universities or 50 TVET colleges.
- Come from a family with an income of below R350 000 per annum (combined).
Students with disabilities and students who are beneficiaries of social grants automatically qualify for NSFAS funding. Students wanting to study towards postgraduate qualifications do not qualify for NSFAS funding – you are encouraged to seek funding from the National Skill Fund and the National Research Foundation.
NSFAS has employed 200 NFAS unemployed graduates to support high learners throughout the country with the application process. These graduates will visit high schools and rural communities with no computer or internet access to assist students.
Registration
- You must register during Unisa’s registration period (3 – 24 January 2023), provided that your NSFAS application has been provisionally approved.
- If your NSFAS application is provisionally approved, you do not need to pay the registration fee. Your registration fee and allowances will be paid to Unisa by NSFAS, provided that you sign a NSFAS bursary agreement form. Unisa Application NSFAS 2023
- If your NSFAS application is rejected, you may appeal during the appeal period. Click here for the 2021 NSFAS appeal form. Please note that the closing date for appeals is 31 January 2023.
- New applicants must appeal directly with NSFAS: www.nsfas.org.za
- Returning students (who were funded in 2023) must appeal via the institution if you were excluded for any of the reasons below. Please note that you will be required to pay your registration fee while your appeal is being evaluated. To apply click here
General instructions
Please read these notes carefully before completing the application form. Make sure that you read every section and that the information you provide is accurate.
•You must write your identity (ID) number in the top right-hand corner of every page of the application form and on every page of all supporting documents.
•Application forms submitted without ALL supporting documents will not be processed by NSFAS.
• NSFAS will process only the first application that we receive. Please do not submit more than one application unless NSFAS requests you to do so.

• NSFAS requires either a cell phone number or email address in order to communicate with you during the application process. If you do not already have an email address, you can create a free email account on Google at www.gmail.com, or on Yahoo at www.yahoo.co.za or any other free email service.
•If your application is successful, NSFAS will use the cell phone number which you write on the application form to pay some of your student allowances by cell phone voucher.
•If you do not already have a bank account, please open a bank account at any bank such as Postbank, ABSA, Capitec, FNB, Standard Bank, Nedbank or others. Some student allowances will be paid into your bank account.
